Trip Insurance vs. Travel Medical Insurance
When planning a trip, it’s important to understand the difference between trip insurance and travel medical insurance. While both are designed to help protect travelers from unexpected events, they serve different purposes. Trip insurance focuses on protecting your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses if your plans are disrupted, while travel medical insurance is designed to help cover eligible medical expenses if you become sick or injured during your trip. Choosing the right option depends on what you want to protect — your travel investment, your health while abroad, or both.

Travel Medical Insurance Plans
Prepare for the Unexpected With Travel Medical Insurance
Travel medical insurance doesn’t prevent an unexpected illness or injury from occurring while you’re abroad but it can help protect you from high out-of-pocket medical costs and guide you to quality care, so you can focus on your trip. WorldTrips’ Atlas Travel medical plans are designed to give you access to essential healthcare coverage, emergency support services, and help provide peace of mind during your travels.
Even the most carefully planned trips can include surprises:
- A sudden stomach bug or food poisoning
- A slip and fall while hiking
- A severe allergic reaction in a foreign city
- A need for emergency transport to a better-equipped medical facility
- Care after an unexpected accident or illness
Travel medical insurance can help reimburse eligible medical expenses, assist with getting you to appropriate care, and support you with travel-related services when you need them most.
Why Travel Medical Insurance Matters
Your domestic health coverage — including Medicare, many HMO/PPO plans, and other regional insurance often doesn’t extend outside your home country and may leave you fully responsible for bills. Travel medical insurance fills that gap with coverage designed for international trips.

What Are the Key Differences Between Trip Insurance and Travel Medical Insurance?
Trip Cancellation
Trip Insurance can help reimburse you for prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel or have a trip interruption for a covered reason like getting sick, an injury, or severe weather. A pre-existing conditions waiver is available for these plans.
Medical Coverage
Both Trip Insurance and Travel Medical Insurance include medical coverage to help cover the cost of doctor visits, hospital stays, and other necessary medical treatment while you’re abroad. Maximum limits and deductibles are different for these plans.
Eligibility
Trip insurance is only available to U.S. citizens and residents, but it provides coverage in the U.S. and/or abroad. Travel medical insurance provides coverage to citizens of most countries, but only for trips abroad.
Why Atlas Journey is a Must for Your Next Trip
Planning a trip takes time, effort, and money—but unexpected events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. Flight cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage, or trip interruptions can lead to unexpected expenses. Atlas Journey, a comprehensive trip protection plan, offers benefits to help offset covered expenses when the unexpected happens.
Kyleigh and her husband Joe experienced firsthand how vital travel insurance can be when their long-awaited trip to Scotland was canceled due to multiple flight disruptions. They had spent $3,500 on their trip and purchased Atlas Journey Preferred for $140 to help protect their investment. Initially, Kyleigh purchased the plan thinking they might need it for medical reasons while hiking in Scotland. However, when their flights were canceled, and two days of their trip were lost, she realized just how essential their coverage was. American Airlines refunded their original flight, but British Airways and their rental car expenses were still at risk—until Kyleigh remembered they had travel insurance.
“I was expecting the usual insurance runaround, but the process was so easy. I submitted the claim with the documents they asked for, and a couple of weeks later, we had two checks in the mail. Atlas Journey made it seamless,” Kyleigh shared. They were reimbursed $1,200 for their covered losses, including their British Airways flights and rental car.
For $140, Kyleigh and Joe were able to protect their $3,500 trip, and when things went wrong, Atlas Journey helped them recover their costs quickly and easily. Don't leave your travel investment unprotected—help safeguard your next trip with Atlas Journey. Kyleigh and Joe’s experience proves that even when you think you may not need travel insurance or assistance services, it can make all the difference if the unexpected occurs.

*Pre-Existing Condition Definitions
Definitions vary by coverage type. Review the section that applies to the coverage you are considering.
Comprehensive Trip Protection (Atlas Journey, Atlas On the Go)
A pre-existing condition is an illness, disease, or other condition during the 90 days before your coverage effective date for which you received a test, exam, or medical treatment, were advised to have a test, exam, or treatment, or took or were prescribed medication.
Conditions treated or controlled solely with prescription medication are not considered pre-existing if they remained treated or controlled with no change in required prescription during the 90 days before your coverage effective date. A change includes dosage or frequency increases, decreases, stoppage, or new medication due to worsening of the condition, but excludes brand-to-generic substitutions at the same dosage and routine insulin or anti-coagulant dosage adjustments.
Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion Waiver
Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless you purchase Atlas Journey Elevate or Explore within 21 days of your first trip payment, or Atlas Escape within 14 days of your first trip payment, and you are medically able to travel on your coverage effective date. If you do not purchase within the required timeframe, a 90-day lookback period will apply. Coverage varies by plan and state, so review your policy documents for complete details.
Travel Medical Insurance (Atlas Travel, Atlas Premium, Atlas Nomad, Atlas MultiTrip, Atlas America)
Pre-existing conditions are excluded, except for a covered Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition.
A pre-existing condition is any injury, illness, disease, or physical, medical, mental, or nervous condition that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of application or during the 2 years before the insurance effective date.
This applies whether or not the condition showed symptoms, was known, diagnosed, treated, or disclosed. It also includes related chronic or recurring complications.
An Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition is a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence that is short in duration, worsens quickly, or requires urgent care.
It does not include chronic or congenital conditions, conditions that worsen over time, or any condition for which, before the effective date, the insured person knew or reasonably expected they would receive care, knew they should receive care, had scheduled care, or were told they must or should receive medical care, drugs, or treatment.
