Destinations and Adventures: Unusual Places for Travel

Families pack up their stuff, get the kids in the car, and drive to the obvious travel spots: theme parks, local nature preserves, and other standard destinations. Sure, visiting major cities and tourist attractions is fun, but what about all the other unique destinations and adventures that everyone is missing out on?

Whether you are traveling alone or with a family, you should consider mixing things up on your next big trip. Here are a few unusual vacation spots that are worth experiencing:

Hotel de Glace

Lying on the outskirts of Quebec City, Canada, Hotel de Glace provides a cool atmosphere to sleep in- literally. Built out of ice and snow, this place is practically an ice castle. Aside from the 85 ice rooms, amenities include a nightclub, movie theater, indoor heated washrooms and outdoor hot tubs.

Every year in January, Hotel de Glace is built from its own self-produced ice and snow and is open for business until it is torn down in April, so you better make your reservation fast!

Gullfoss Waterfall, Iceland

Located in the canyon of the Hvítá River in the southwest portion of the Iceland, Gullfoss plunges off of two tiers into the river below. If you are looking for some unusual destinations and adventures, do not pass this up. Gullfoss waterfall is obscured from view, giving those who approach an unusual sight as the river seems to disappear into the canyon side.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Looking for more unusual fun? Check out Angkor Wat, located in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is a temple with a very eccentric architectural plan. No longer in service as a religious temple, trees have folded their roots to the temple walls, creating an awe-inspiring picture. Surrounded by blue waters, this abandoned temple calls for people who are looking for unusual destinations and adventures to fill its walls.

Tsala Treetop Lodge, South Africa

If you are looking for a lot more adventure, head to the Tsala Treetop Lodge where you can stay in your own tree house suite overlooking the Tsitsikamma Forest. During the day, journey through South Africa's Garden Route that sets along the Western Cape, or get a little rest and relaxation on the beaches near Plettenberg Bay.
