What Type of Doctor Appoint Should I Make?
The list of medical conditions provided is intended to provide general guidance and not to serve as an exhaustive list of conditions, nor as a substitute for personalized and professional medical advice. Proper and personalized diagnosis and treatment planning can only be determined by consulting a qualified medical practitioner who can thoroughly assess the patient’s specific circumstances, symptoms, and medical history.
About Video Consultations
Video consultation has become an increasingly popular and effective alternative for outpatient medical care, allowing patients to consult with healthcare professionals remotely. While it is not suitable for every medical condition, many conditions can be effectively diagnosed and treated through video consultation.
Here's a list of medical conditions that typically (i.e. in non-aggravated, non-sensitive circumstances) can usually be managed through Video Consultation:
- Common Cold and Flu
- Allergies: General Practitioners can provide advice, prescribe medications, and discuss management strategies.
- Sinus Infections: Symptoms can be evaluated, and appropriate treatment can be prescribed.
- Respiratory Infections: Including bronchitis and pneumonia, where symptoms can be assessed, and treatment recommendations can be made.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Symptoms can be discussed, and antibiotics can be prescribed.
- Skin Conditions: Dermatologists can visually assess skin issues, provide treatment recommendations, and prescribe medications.
- Rashes: Rash appearance and accompanying symptoms can be evaluated.
- Minor Injuries: Consultation on minor cuts, scrapes, burns, or bruises, with instructions on wound care.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Symptoms can be assessed and recommend treatments for issues like acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and more.
- Pain Management: Physicians can discuss symptoms and provide treatment options.
- Pediatric Care: Consultations with pediatricians for non-urgent issues like fevers, rashes, and minor injuries.
- Ophthalmology: Some eye conditions, like conjunctivitis or red eye, can be assessed through video consultation.
- Women's Health: Gynecological consultations for issues like urinary tract infections and mild menstrual complaints.
- Orthopedic Consultations: For non-urgent musculoskeletal issues doctors can provide advice.
In-Person Consultations
While video consultation is suitable for many outpatients’ medical conditions, there are certain situations where an in-person evaluation is typically necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Here's a list of common medical conditions or pathologies that often require in-person, in clinic, physical examinations for proper diagnosis and treatment but typically don’t require hospitalization:
- Fractures and Dislocations: A physical examination and imaging (X-rays or CT scans) are often needed to assess the extent of bone injuries.
- Cardiovascular Conditions: Conditions like heart murmurs, arrhythmias, or congestive heart failure often require auscultation, electrocardiography, or echocardiography.
- Respiratory Conditions: Upper Respiratory Infections (URIs), asthma, pneumonia and allergic rhinitis, among others.
- Gastrointestinal Conditions: In-person evaluation for conditions like ulcerative colitis, or gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Genitourinary Conditions: Conditions involving the genitourinary system often require pelvic, rectal, or prostate examinations, as well as imaging studies.
- Gynecological Issues: Pelvic pain and menstrual irregularities.
- Orthopedic Conditions: Assessment of joint and musculoskeletal issues, such as osteoarthritis or torn ligaments, requires physical examination and often imaging.
- Dermatological Disorders: Skin conditions that require direct inspection.
- Ophthalmic Conditions: Comprehensive eye exams, including fundoscopy and slit-lamp examinations, are needed for conditions like retinal detachment or other eye injuries.
- Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Issues: Conditions like sinusitis, tonsillitis, and hearing loss often require direct examination by an ENT specialist.
- Dental and Oral Health Problems: Acute pain, gum inflammation, broken teeth, broken orthodontic devices and others require in-person dental exams.
- Infectious Diseases: Certain infectious diseases may require physical examination, sample collection, and cultures to identify the causative agent.
- Minor Surgical Procedures: Open wounds or lacerations.
- IV Treatments: Rehydration fluids.
- Laboratory Testing: Blood tests, urine tests, and other laboratory tests.
