What Is Trip Insurance?

Trip insurance, or trip protection insurance, is designed to protect your trip costs in case of a delay or alteration of your travel plans. It can reimburse you if your luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged. Trip insurance also comes with eligible medical expense coverage in case you become injured or require medical evacuation during your trip.

Trip insurance includes both trip cancellation insurance and trip interruption insurance, but there are key differences between the two plans. Trip cancellation insurance must be purchased before you leave on your trip, while trip interruption can be purchased the day you leave or after you’ve departed. Trip cancellation insurance also includes a Trip Cancellation benefit while trip interruption insurance does not.

What Is Trip Cancellation Insurance?

At WorldTrips, we offer three Atlas Journey® trip cancellation insurance plans. These plans are available to U.S. residents and are designed for both domestic and international trips, including cruises. They include reimbursement coverage for canceled trips, damaged luggage, flight delays, and medical treatment.

All three plans also include access to travel and emergency assistance services. Our team is available to answer all your travel questions and help with emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for various languages and any time zone.

Designed for the budget-conscious traveler, Atlas Journey Escape provides lower coverage limits in exchange for a lower premium.

What Is Trip Interruption Insurance?

Trip interruption insurance, or a post-departure trip insurance, is trip insurance that can be purchased the day you leave or after you’ve left on your trip. WorldTrips offers Atlas On-The-Go as a trip interruption insurance plan.

An interruption is when your trip is cut short following your departure. Some covered reasons for trip interruption include:

  • You or your traveling companion have become sick or injured and a physician recommends that you end your trip early and return home
  • Sickness or injury of your family member, business partner, service animal, or your traveling companion’s family member that requires medical treatment by a physician
  • Your death or the death of your traveling companion, family member, business partner, service animal, or traveling companion’s family member
  • Severe weather, natural disaster, or strike that causes your common carrier to shut down for 12 or more hours

Atlas-On-The-Go does not include any trip cancellation benefits or optional upgrades since it can only be purchased after your departure or on the day of departure.
