Is Trip Cancellation Insurance Required for Travel Abroad?

No, trip cancellation insurance isn’t required. But it’s important to know that some countries require foreign visitors to have international travel insurance that meets specific requirements. Others may only require proof of (any) valid insurance for the duration of a trip.

Will My Current Health Plan Cover Me Overseas?

Your regular health insurance that covers you on a daily basis may not provide any coverage once you leave your home country. Even if it does include some international health coverage, it may not include a Medical Evacuation benefit or trip benefits like Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Travel Delay.

Your travel-related credit card could offer some compensation for travel mishaps, but it’s unlikely that it includes any overseas medical coverage. Atlas Journey trip cancellation insurance provides an array of trip benefits—plus up to $250,000 for unexpected medical expenses.

How Trip Cancellation Insurance Works in Action

  • Your best friend’s mom passes away a week before you’re set to depart on a trip together.

Understandably, your friend decides not to go on the trip. You don’t want to go without her, so you cancel your flights and hotel. Your Atlas Journey plan’s Trip Cancellation benefit could reimburse you for these prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.

  • You’re on a business trip when your wife unexpectedly goes into labor. You fly home early so you can be there for your baby’s birth.

Your Atlas Journey policy’s Trip Interruption benefit may pay for your plane ticket back home so you can be there for your wife and newborn child.

  • Your flight is delayed until morning due to severe storms.

You book a hotel room so you don’t have to spend the night at the airport. Your Atlas Journey plan’s Travel Delay benefit could reimburse you for the taxi to the hotel, your hotel stay, and the meals you hadn’t factored into your budget.

  • Your rental is broken in to and your baggage is stolen.

You purchase new clothes and toiletries for the rest of your trip. Because you filed a police report, your Atlas Journey plan could reimburse you for these items.

  • You’re sightseeing when you trip and break your ankle.
Your Atlas Journey plan’s Emergency Accident and Sickness Medical Expense benefit may pay for eligible expenses resulting from your hospital visit and the treatment you need to get back on your feet.

How Much Does Trip Cancellation Insurance Cost?

That depends. The price you’ll pay for your Atlas Journey trip cancellation insurance plan is based on a couple of key factors:

  • Age: As your age increases -> So will the cost of your plan
  • Trip Cost: As your trip cost increases -> So will the cost of your plan
  • Date of Purchase: The further your purchase is from your departure date -> The more expensive your plan will be

Trips over 30 days have an additional charge. Your state of residence may factor into your price too.

Here’s an example. Imagine you’re a thirty-year-old Indiana resident departing on a 5-day, $3,000 trip. You purchase your plan 21 days before your departure date. Here are the plan options you’ll see when you input your trip details:

  • Atlas Journey Escape: $61
  • Atlas Journey Explore: $77
  • Atlas Journey Elevate: $82
