Studying in a different country for your undergraduate, masters, or doctorate program can often span multiple months and many countries. Student travel insurance can provide you with medical coverage away from home. WorldTrips offers StudentSecure®, an international student medical insurance plan with four levels of coverage that can offer various benefit levels for your travel plans.

StudentSecure Is for International Students Seeking:

  • Coverage that meets or exceeds most government and visa requirements, including J-1 visa requirements
  • Coverage that meets the requirements of many programs and schools at a budget-friendly rate
  • Important medical benefits, including some outpatient prescription drug coverage and some mental health coverage

Reasons You Might Need Student Travel Insurance

1. Your School or Program May Require Student Travel Insurance

It is very likely that your domestic health insurance plan does not cover international travel. This is why many study abroad programs and schools require participants to purchase student travel health insurance before they depart.

2. Certain Visas Require International Student Health Insurance Coverage

Most countries require incoming students to possess a visa for study abroad, and some visas require study abroad insurance that meets specific requirements. One such visa is the J-1 visa for incoming exchange students to the USA.

3. Accidents and Illnesses Can Happen Unexpectedly

When you travel abroad, you may be engaging in unfamiliar activities, trying new foods, and adjusting to a new time zone – all of which could make you more susceptible to illness or injury.

Unanticipated medical treatment while traveling abroad can result in significant medical expenses. Student travel health insurance can provide you with coverage for eligible expenses and access to quality medical care, so you could have less worry about costly medical expenses.

4. Additional Travel Assistance Services Included With Student Travel Insurance

WorldTrips’ StudentSecure plans go beyond travel health insurance services. If you’ve lost your passport or you’re in need of translation assistance or provider referrals, reach out to our World Service Center. Our travel assistance services are available to our international student insurance policyholders 365 days a year, for various languages and any time zone. Emergency assistance is available 24/7.

Does the Student Travel Insurance Plan Align With Your Budget?

Full-time students are often conscious of their spending habits, and travel medical insurance is something that may be considered a gratuitous expense. WorldTrips has four StudentSecure plans available for customers to choose from. All of them include 24/7 emergency travel assistance services and meet J-1 and Schengen visa requirements.

Does the Student Travel Insurance Plan Meet My School or Program’s Requirements?

Many universities offer their own student health plans, though your university may allow you to waive its school-sponsored coverage if you can provide proof of coverage that still meets health plan requirements. To meet J-1 visa requirements for incoming exchange students to the USA, your student travel medical insurance plan must meet the following criteria:

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of at least $25,000
  • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation and the return of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of at least $50,000
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

All StudentSecure® plans from WorldTrips meet J-1 visa requirements – as well as the requirements of many schools. Plus, when you purchase a StudentSecure travel medical plan, you will have access to your visa letter and insurance ID card as proof of coverage, and a student waiver form can be completed and sent to your university.

Will My Student Travel Insurance Plan Help Me Find Medical Care?

A quality international student health insurance plan should provide access to travel assistance services or an emergency hotline that can direct you to a local medical facility and help you find a doctor in your area. Our assistance services can also help you find a consulate or legal professional, assist you with lost or stolen travel documents, and more.
