Travel Insurance for Indonesia
Before embarking on your Indonesia adventure, don’t forget to protect your travels with either trip protection plan or travel medical insurance.Do You Need Travel Insurance for Indonesia?
You are not legally required to have travel insurance when visiting Indonesia, but it is strongly recommended that you purchase travel insurance before your trip (U.S. Dept of State). Insurance can protect you from unexpected costs from situations such as unexpected illnesses and accidents, or trip disruptions. For adventurous travelers, it is also wise to consider a plan with additional coverage if you plan to take part in activities like diving, hiking, or other adventure sports.
Travel insurance can help you prepare for medical needs, evacuation logistics, and interruptions to your itinerary. According to On Call International*, Indonesia’s unique geography—an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands—creates varying levels of potentially hazardous situations across different regions. Travelers should be aware of these situations such as monsoons, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and wildfires, as well as theft and large demonstrations in cities and tourist areas. On top of that, tropical illnesses and occasional political unrest, including local strikes and protests, can further disrupt travel plans.
What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Trip?
The two main types of travel insurance to consider include comprehensive trip protection and travel medical insurance.
A comprehensive trip protection plan can cover both your prepaid travel expenses such as flights, hotels, and excursions, and it also provides medical benefits for unexpected illnesses, injuries, or emergency medical evacuations. Trip protection is often a better fit for travelers who worry more about disruptions, delays, or cancellations that could cause them to lose money or face extra costs.
For example, with WorldTrips comprehensive trip protection plan, Atlas Journey, if you need to cancel your trip or if your trip is disrupted for a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for non-refundable trip costs.
Travel medical insurance on the other hand, provides coverage for unexpected illnesses or injuries while traveling with some limited trip benefits like for lost checked luggage or travel delays.
For instance, with Atlas Travel insurance, you’ll be able to utilize 2 claimless visits through Air Doctor, a service that connects you to telehealth consultations, in-clinic care, or even in-hotel visits during your trip. These plans are designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to select your deductible and coverage limits based on your destination, length of stay, and budget.

Travel Insurance for Indonesia: Key Benefits to Consider
It is important to research where you’ll be traveling to within Indonesia to consider the type of travel insurance coverage that best fits with your trip. When looking for these benefits, be sure to carefully evaluate each policy, as coverage details and limits can vary significantly between plans. Here are some key benefits to look out for when considering travel insurance for Indonesia:
- Emergency medical coverage
High-quality private hospitals are available in major cities including Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, and Surabaya, while rural facilities typically have limited supplies. Choosing a plan with a strong medical limit can help provide access to private care in urban centers and also to receive treatment if you fall ill or get injured in remote areas.
- Emergency medical evacuation
Geography and variable infrastructure can delay emergency response, and sometimes inter-island transfers are necessary to reach specialized care. Medical evacuation coverage can step in to make sure you are transported to the nearest facility equipped to treat you for life or limb-saving emergencies, whether that is within Indonesia or in another country.
- Trip cancellation and trip interruption
Natural hazards like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and monsoons have forced evacuations and shut down airports in the past. Trip cancellation and interruption benefits provided by a trip protection plan can help protect prepaid, nonrefundable costs if these events cut your trip short or cancel your plans altogether.
- Travel delay and missed connection
Indonesia, wildfire haze has disrupted airport operations, while landslides and traffic congestion can bring overland travel to a standstill. Delay benefits can cover meals, lodging, and even rebooking costs so an unexpected pause doesn’t turn into a budget-busting headache.
- Baggage and personal effects
Petty theft is common in popular tourist areas such as Bali and lost or delayed baggage can throw off your travel plans. Coverage for personal items adds a layer of protection for electronics, cameras, and other essentials.
- Adventure or sports coverage
Indonesia is a hub for diving, surfing, trekking, and other high-adrenaline activities. Some travel insurance policies may exclude these, so if your itinerary includes adventure sports, be sure to review the coverage details.

Healthcare in Indonesia
Healthcare in Indonesia varies greatly by location within the country. Private hospitals and clinics in major cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, and Surabaya generally provide high-quality care, while rural facilities often have limited supplies and staff. The U.S. Department of State also notes that ambulance availability can be limited, leading to slower emergency response times. English is commonly spoken in private urban hospitals but less so in rural areas. Payment is typically required upfront, even in emergencies, and life-saving medical procedures may require medical evacuation to another country.
Travelers are strongly advised to carry prescription medications in original packaging with proper documentation, as Indonesian authorities may classify some common drugs as illegal narcotics. Vaccinations, supplemental travel insurance, and medical evacuation coverage are highly recommended since U.S. Medicare/Medicaid, and most U.S. health insurance plans are not accepted abroad.
Will Your Domestic Insurance Work in Indonesia?
It is unlikely that your domestic insurance will cover you when traveling to Indonesia, although it is helpful to review your home policy before deciding whether to purchase additional coverage abroad.
“Most U.S. domestic health plans provide limited coverage overseas and won’t cover prescriptions abroad,” According to the Chief Medical Officer at UnitedHealthcare Global, Margaret Wilson, M.D., (Consumer Reports).
For example, Medicare does not offer international coverage without the purchase of an additional plan that includes that benefit. Because of this, major insurance providers along with the CDC recommend purchasing travel insurance when traveling Internationally.
Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Indonesia has a higher prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and Zika. According to the U.S. Department of State, preventative medication can be taken for malaria, and travelers can take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. Wear long sleeves and pants, use insect repellent with DEET, and sleep with windows closed or use nets and repellent devices in areas with high mosquito populations.
Other Diseases
Rabies, measles, and diarrheal illnesses from unsafe food and water are important to be aware of. Travelers should avoid animal contact and be vaccinated if possible. Tap water is unsafe to drink, and even ice can pose risks if made with untreated water. Only use filtered/bottled water.
Pharmaceutical Laws
Strict drug laws criminalize marijuana, CBD, and THC products regardless of medical prescriptions, and can come with harsh penalties. Counterfeit medications are a widespread problem, so it is important to use only reputable pharmacies. Travelers should review CDC, WHO, and embassy resources to prepare for medical needs and risks before visiting Indonesia.
Air Quality & Respiratory Health
During the dry season, wildfires on Borneo and Sumatra can lead to poor air quality and airport disruption. On poor‑air days, limit outdoor activity, stay indoors when possible, and consider a face mask to reduce exposure.
Street Crime Precautions
Petty and opportunistic theft are common in big cities and tourist areas. Stay alert in crowded places, avoid carrying large sums of cash, and keep valuables out of sight. Motorcycle snatch thieves target distracted pedestrians, especially those using phones. Walk away from the curb, wear your bag on the side farthest from traffic, and avoid using your phone while walking along roads. Residential break‑ins occur in urban areas; choose reputable accommodations with visible security and use in‑room safes.
Road & Taxi Safety
Road quality varies, and driving can be erratic. If injuries occur in a crash, both drivers must remain at the scene until the police arrive. In some rural areas, criminals have erected makeshift roadblocks to rob drivers. Do not resist or attempt to bypass a roadblock. Be sure to use licensed taxis arranged by your hotel, not unmarked or freelance cars.
Ferries & Boats
Avoid water travel by ferry when possible. Ferries are often overloaded, may lack life jackets, and are not well monitored, so they are not the safest means of travel.
Scams & Payment Safety
Credit card fraud has occurred at small merchants and restaurants. Use cash at smaller establishments when you can and monitor bank statements for suspicious activity.
Protests & Terrorism Awareness
Large demonstrations can arise with little notice and may turn violent due to heavy‑handed crowd control. The terrorism threat remains high nationwide, with higher risk in Aceh, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, and West Papua, and in major hubs such as Jakarta, Denpasar, and Surabaya. Avoid protest areas, monitor local media, and be prepared to change plans.
Local Laws & Sensitivities
Legal restrictions against homosexuality exist across parts of the country, and LGBTQ+ travelers face a high risk of harassment. The province of Aceh implements Sharia law with strict punishments. Dress modestly away from resorts, remove shoes when entering homes or places of worship, and be mindful of alcohol and pork consumption in public.
Natural Hazards
- Research the area you are visiting and stay aware of predicted eruptions and weather patterns. It is important to respect posted exclusion zones and follow local instructions during eruptions or after earthquakes. Natural hazards that could cause travel disruptions include:
- Monsoon season typically runs from November to March and can bring severe rain, flooding, and landslides.
- Volcanoes across islands such as Halmahera, Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra, and the Sunda Islands can erupt and prompt evacuations or airspace closures. Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire and has more active volcanoes than any other country.
- Earthquakes & Tsunamis remain a persistent risk.
- Wildfires on Borneo and Sumatra in the dry season can create haze that disrupts airport operations and worsens air quality.
By staying prepared, researching your destinations, and practicing common-sense precautions, you can reduce risks and focus on enjoying Indonesia’s culture, beaches, history, and natural wonders.

• took or received a prescription for medication
Item (3) above does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the use of prescription medication and remains treated or controlled without any change in required prescription throughout the 90 day period before your coverage effective date.
Change in required prescription means the dosage or frequency has been increased, reduced, stopped, and or new medication has been prescribed due to the worsening of the condition being treated. Exceptions include:

If you do not purchase your Atlas Journey plan within the required time period, a 90-day lookback period will apply to pre-existing conditions. Coverage varies by plan and state of residency.
