Couples Travel Insurance

When couples travel together, illnesses, injuries, or trip disruptions don't just affect one person—they can impact both travelers and the entire trip. Travel insurance can help protect your shared investment and provide coverage for both of you when faced with unexpected illness, injury, travel delay, and more.

Do You Need Travel Insurance for Couples Travel?

Couples may want to consider travel insurance because disruptions tend to affect both travelers. If one partner becomes sick, injured, or faces an emergency, the other partner's trip is usually impacted as well.

The U.S. Department of State advises travelers to consider insurance for international trips because most U.S. health insurance plans do not provide full coverage overseas, and medical evacuation can be extremely expensive without insurance. Couples should consider travel insurance when traveling internationally, booking expensive or nonrefundable trips such as honeymoons, visiting remote destinations, or planning activities where medical care may be difficult to access.

Consider Travel Insurance If:

  • You are taking an international trip, and your health coverage is limited abroad
  • You are visiting more rural or remote areas where medical care or emergency medical evacuation is more difficult to obtain and more expensive
  • You have scheduled and paid for nonrefundable expenses that are not easily replaceable, such as pre-booked activities or hotels

You May Not Need Travel Insurance If:

  • You are taking a short, domestic trip that has minimal nonrefundable spend
  • Your trip is flexible, refundable, and/or inexpensive

What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Couples Trip?

While some couples prefer a peaceful escape filled with lounging on the beach and relaxing, others prefer an action-packed safari adventure. Every couple is unique, and so is every vacation. It’s important to consider what kind of travel insurance best suits your travel style and itinerary.

Trip Protection for Couples

Many couples prefer a comprehensive trip protection plan for their couples trip. This kind of plan is designed to help safeguard the investment you’ve already made in your trip, including nonrefundable airfare, lodging, tours, and more. These plans often include coverage for unexpected medical emergencies and emergency medical evacuations as well. If you have a lot of prepaid activities planned and you want financial protection in case your trip is canceled, delayed, or interrupted, this type of coverage may be a better fit for your trip.

WorldTrips’ Atlas Journey® comprehensive trip protection plan can reimburse eligible prepaid costs if your trip is cancelled, delayed, or cut short for a covered reason, which can help reduce the financial impact when travel plans change.

Travel Medical Insurance for Couples

If you are planning a longer trip or have fewer prepaid expenses, you may prefer travel medical insurance. This type of plan provides coverage for unexpected medical expenses that may arise while traveling, while still including some limited trip protection benefits. You can learn more about WorldTrips’ Atlas Travel® medical insurance here.

Why Couples Should Consider Travel Insurance

Your partner gets injured the day before your flight.

You and/or your partner getting injured may be a covered reason for cancelling or delaying a trip if your doctor says you are unable to travel. You may be able to get reimbursed for nonrefundable prepaid items including plane tickets, hotel costs, planned activities, and more.

You planned a weekend trip, but the nanny cancelled and you’re unable to find a last-minute babysitter.

While this wouldn’t be part of a base comprehensive trip protection plan, WorldTrips offers a Cancel For Any Reason Add-On that allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and receive between 50% and 75% of your total eligible nonrefundable trip costs reimbursed. Especially for those with children, this can help provide peace of mind while traveling.

You and your partner enjoyed your couples’ ski trip, but due to a snowstorm, all flights from your departing airport are cancelled for the next 24 hours.

With comprehensive trip protection, you may be able to get reimbursed for the unexpected, covered costs associated with new plane tickets, food, and lodging while you wait for the next flight home. WorldTrips also offers 24/7 emergency support, so with one phone call we can help guide you through what can be a confusing experience for travelers.

While on vacation, your partner gets a high fever and needs to visit a local doctor.

If you purchase a comprehensive trip protection or travel medical plan, your partner may be able to receive reimbursement for medical expenses from any provider of your choice.

Couples Travel Insurance FAQs

Does one policy cover both travelers?

With Atlas Journey, both travelers can be on one policy. With Atlas Travel, both travelers can purchase their policies together, but each of you will have your own policy number.

Can I use my credit card for travel insurance?

While some travel credit cards offer certain travel insurance benefits, it is important for travelers to check beforehand how much coverage is actually being offered. Credit cards often offer some coverage, typically more related to travel delays and interruption or baggage loss, and may not provide coverage for emergency medical expenses. Purchasing additional travel insurance can still be helpful even if your credit card provides some benefits.

Is "couples travel insurance" actually different from regular travel insurance?

Couples insurance is the same as standard travel insurance. With WorldTrips, you have the flexibility to add optional upgrades and choose your benefits and limits to make your travel insurance unique to your trip.

When should couples buy travel insurance for their trip?

It can be wise to purchase travel insurance soon after making your first nonrefundable trip payment. Buying travel insurance early on can provide access to additional benefits in some cases.

WorldTrips offers several different options in terms of Travel Insurance. We offer customizable options, global coverage, and 24/7 emergency travel assistance. Get a quote today and find the plan that is right for you!
