Travel Insurance for Canada
Canada is well known for its strong public safety record and excellent infrastructure in its major cities like Toronto and Vancouver. Despite Canada’s tourist-friendly demeanor , travelers should plan for realities like variable access to care in remote regions, facilities that may ask for payment up front, seasonal severe weather, and opportunistic theft in crowded places. Travel insurance is a great place to start.
Do You Need Travel Insurance for Canada?
Travel insurance isn’t mandatory for Canada, but it’s recommended when traveling internationally (U.S. Department of State). According to On Call International* medical care can be pricey for visitors, and many facilities require upfront payment. Outside major cities, healthcare access and emergency response can be limited, especially in wilderness areas. Canada’s weather can also play tricks on your plans — winter storms, wildfires, and severe weather often cause travel delays. Petty crime happens in tourist hotspots and public transit hubs, and although the terrorism risk is low, authorities still report occasional plots and threats.
If you decide to protect your trip, compare travel insurance details and choose coverage that aligns with your itinerary and activities.
Will Domestic Insurance Work in Canada?
Your U.S. health insurance may not provide sufficient protection during your trip to Canada, so it’s wise to review your existing coverage before you depart.
Healthcare received outside the United States is usually not covered by Medicare, except under specific and limited circumstances, as stated by Medicare.gov. Travelers who depend on Medicare often must obtain additional insurance to ensure coverage overseas, a challenge shared by many U.S. health plans.
As a result, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that international travelers consider purchasing travel medical insurance for international trips. Given that healthcare systems and costs in Canada can vary widely from those at home, having appropriate coverage can help protect against unforeseen situations.
What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Trip?
Travel insurance for Canada generally falls into two categories — comprehensive trip protection and travel medical insurance. Learning what each one offers can help you select the right coverage for your trip. A comprehensive trip protection plan can help reimburse prepaid, non-refundable travel costs—such as flights, accommodations, and tours—while also providing limited medical coverage for unexpected illnesses, injuries, or emergency medical evacuations. This type of plan is best suited for travelers seeking protection from disruptions, cancellations, or delays that could result in losing prepaid expenses or incurring additional costs.
For example, WorldTrips’ Atlas Journey comprehensive trip protection plan may reimburse you for eligible trip cancellations or interruptions, helping you recover non-refundable costs if your plans change for a covered reason.
Travel medical insurance, on the other hand, is designed primarily to cover unexpected medical needs while you’re abroad. These plans may also include limited travel benefits, such as coverage for lost baggage or trip delays.
With Atlas Travel insurance from WorldTrips, you have access to Air Doctor, a service that connects you to telehealth appointments, in-person clinic visits, or even doctor visits at your hotel. These plans are built for flexibility, allowing you to tailor your deductible and coverage limits according to your destination, trip duration, and budget.

Healthcare in Canada
According to On Call International* and the U.S. Department of State, Canada’s major cities provide excellent medical care, but healthcare access in rural and wilderness areas can be limited. If your itinerary includes remote regions, plan for longer travel times in an emergency and prepare backup options. Because some hospitals require upfront payment, travel insurance coverage can be an important tool. Keep prescription medications in original containers with your doctor’s script and speak with your physician before traveling. For emergencies across Canada, dial 911.
If you need medical attention during your trip to Canada, WorldTrips lets you see any doctor or hospital you prefer for eligible care. You’ll pay upfront and then file a claim for reimbursement later for covered costs. When filing your claim with WorldTrips make sure you hang on to the following documents to help support your claim:
- Itemized medical bills showing diagnosis details
- Medical records and prescriptions
- Receipts for all payments made
- A doctor’s note if your condition impacted your travel plans

Street smarts and petty theft
- Petty and opportunistic crime is the most common risk for visitors. Keep phones, wallets, and passports on your person in crowded markets, transit hubs, and tourist districts, and expect theft attempts to increase during the summer months.
- On subways, buses, and trains, keep bags in your lap or between your feet. Items stowed overhead or under the seat are frequently reported stolen.
- Park in well‑lit areas and remove valuables from vehicles. Car break‑ins and thefts do occur.
- Violent incidents are uncommon for tourists and are most often linked to gang activity or domestic disputes among people who know one another. Avoid high‑risk neighborhoods and deserted areas after dark.
Weather, nature, and seasonality
- Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November and can bring coastal flooding and high winds in eastern provinces. Canada also faces severe winter storms that disrupt airports and ground travel, and cold exposure can become dangerous quickly without proper layers.
- Wildfires are a recurring hazard and have recently reached record severity, with authorities issuing early emergency measures ahead of subsequent seasons. Monitor official forecasts and air‑quality alerts and be ready to adjust plans.
- Swim with caution. Strong currents exist along some coasts and lifeguards may not be present on many beaches. Only confident swimmers should enter unfamiliar waters.
Roads and transit
Urban highways are generally in good condition, but standards vary in rural areas. Heavy traffic, road work, and winter weather can raise risks for unfamiliar drivers. Taxis and rideshare services are widely considered safe; public transport is generally reliable, with routine vigilance against pickpockets. Plan routes in advance and drive only if you are familiar with local laws and conditions.
Cybersecurity basics
Cybercrime is increasing. Use strong passwords and two‑factor authentication, avoid suspicious links, and consider a VPN on public Wi‑Fi. Monitor financial statements and report anomalies promptly to your bank.
Events and crowd safety
Demonstrations are typically peaceful but can cause localized disruption. As a rule, avoid protests and large gatherings and follow police instructions if you encounter one.
Documents and essentials
Carry a copy of your passport and keep the original secure. Keep devices charged, store backups of key documents, and know how to reach local emergency services. For weather, follow official government channels such as Environment Canada.

Pre existing condition means an illness, disease, or other condition during the 90 day period immediately before your coverage effective date for which you did any of the following:
• received a test, examination, or medical treatment
• received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment
• took or received a prescription for medication
Item (3) above does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the use of prescription medication and remains treated or controlled without any change in required prescription throughout the 90 day period before your coverage effective date.
Change in required prescription means the dosage or frequency has been increased, reduced, stopped, and or new medication has been prescribed due to the worsening of the condition being treated. Exceptions include:
• switching between brand name and generic medication with equivalent dosage

Pre-existing Condition Exclusion Waiver: Pre-existing conditions are excluded from coverage unless you meet both of these requirements: 1) you purchase your Atlas Journey Elevate or Explore plan within 21 days or purchase your Atlas Escape plan within 14 days of the date you made your first payment toward your trip; and 2) you are medically able to travel on your coverage effective date.
If you do not purchase your Atlas Journey plan within the required time period, a 90-day lookback period will apply to pre-existing conditions. Coverage varies by plan and state of residency.
