Travel Insurance for New Zealand
New Zealand’s soaring peaks, rugged coastlines, and vibrant cities invite exploration at every turn. But every adventure can come with risks, from sprained ankles on mountain trails to flight delays across the Pacific. Travel insurance for your New Zealand trip helps you handle the unexpected so you can focus on creating lasting memories.
Do You Need Travel Insurance for New Zealand?
Travel insurance is not legally required for most short stays in New Zealand, but it is recommended that international travelers consider purchasing additional coverage (U.S. Department of State). For longer visits or specific visa types, travelers may be required to maintain medical coverage for the duration of their stay. This kind of protection is especially valuable since, according to On Call international*, a rescue and evacuation from remote regions, replacing lost belongings, or covering nonrefundable trip costs can quickly become expensive.
When selecting travel insurance for New Zealand, look for plans that offer coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or delayed baggage. These features can help protect you financially and give you peace of mind if your trip takes an unexpected turn.
Will Domestic Insurance Work in New Zealand?
Your U.S. health insurance may provide little or no coverage while you’re in New Zealand, so it’s essential to review your policy before traveling.
According to Medicare.gov, Medicare generally does not cover healthcare services outside the United States, except in very limited situations. As a result, travelers who depend on Medicare often need supplemental coverage to access medical care abroad—a restriction that also applies to many U.S.-based health plans.
To address these potential coverage gaps, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises travelers to consider purchasing travel medical insurance. Since New Zealand’s healthcare system and costs can differ substantially from those in the United States, having appropriate coverage can help protect against unexpected medical expenses.
What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Trip?
Before traveling to New Zealand, it’s important to understand the two main types of travel insurance available: comprehensive trip protection and travel medical insurance.
A comprehensive trip protection plan can help safeguard both your prepaid travel expenses—such as flights, accommodations, and tours—and provide limited medical coverage for unexpected illnesses, injuries, or emergency medical evacuations. This type of plan is better suited for travelers who want protection from disruptions like cancellations, delays, or interruptions that could lead to financial loss or additional expenses.
For example, with WorldTrips comprehensive trip protection plan, Atlas Journey®, you may be reimbursed for nonrefundable trip costs if you need to cancel or your trip is interrupted for a covered reason.
Travel medical insurance, by contrast, focuses on higher medical coverage limits for unexpected illnesses or injuries during your trip, while still offering limited travel protection benefits such as coverage for lost checked baggage or travel delays.
With Atlas Travel® insurance, you can access Air Doctor, a service that connects you with telehealth consultations, in-clinic appointments, or even in-hotel visits while abroad. These flexible plans let you choose your deductible and coverage limits based on your travel destination, trip length, and budget.

Healthcare in New Zealand
Healthcare in New Zealand is generally excellent, with modern hospitals and quality urgent care available in major cities. However, access can be limited in remote areas, meaning travelers may need medical transport to larger facilities for serious conditions. Ambulance services and follow-up care can also lead to unexpected out-of-pocket costs for visitors. Pharmacies are easy to find in towns and cities, and many urban areas have after-hours clinics for non-emergency care (U.S. Department of State).
Visitors are responsible for paying their own medical costs in New Zealand unless they’re covered under a reciprocal healthcare agreement between their home country and New Zealand. The Accident Compensation Corporation may subsidize treatment for accidental injuries that occur in New Zealand for residents and visitors, but it does not cover illness or most non-medical expenses.
If you need medical care while in New Zealand, WorldTrips can help connect you with any licensed healthcare provider for eligible medical services—no network restrictions. You’ll need to pay the medical provider upfront, then submit a claim afterward to be considered for reimbursement for covered costs.
When filing your claim with WorldTrips, be sure to include:
- Itemized medical bills that list diagnoses and treatments
- Medical records and any prescriptions
- Receipts for payments you’ve made
- A doctor’s note if your condition affected your travel plans

Weather
Check weather and track conditions before hiking or boating. Conditions can change quickly, especially in alpine and coastal areas. Protect yourself from strong ultraviolet radiation. Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a brimmed hat, even on overcast days.
Natural Disasters
New Zealand is in the Ring of Fire, making it prone to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Always follow guidance from local authorities including elevated risk for eruptions and respect exclusion zones for volcanoes. If shaking starts, follow local guidance to Drop, Cover, and Hold.Travel & Equipment
If heading into the backcountry, register your plans with a visitor center, carry enough food and water, and consider a personal locator beacon. Respect strict biosecurity controls at the border. Clean equipment to avoid fines and declare food, plant material, and outdoor gear.Petty Crime
New Zealand is considered one of the safest countries globally, with one of the lowest crime rates. However, it is still important to be aware of your surroundings to avoid petty crimes like pickpocketing, especially in large crowds and tourist areas. Keep valuables secure in crowded areas and park in well-lit locations.Cultural Awareness
New Zealand is well-known globally for its diverse mix of cultures, from the Maori, which are the indigenous peoples of the island, along with European, Asian, and Pacific cultures.Diseases
Mosquito-borne diseases, including Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika are a concern in parts of the country’s associated areas, including Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau. Preventing mosquito bites is an important measure for travelers. Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats, and using insect repellants that contain DEET and repellent devices while sleeping can help lower the risk of bites.Emergencies

• received a test, examination, or medical treatment
• received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment
• took or received a prescription for medication
Item (3) above does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the use of prescription medication and remains treated or controlled without any change in required prescription throughout the 90 day period before your coverage effective date.
Change in required prescription means the dosage or frequency has been increased, reduced, stopped, and or new medication has been prescribed due to the worsening of the condition being treated. Exceptions include:
• switching between brand name and generic medication with equivalent dosage

Pre-existing Condition Exclusion Waiver: Pre-existing conditions are excluded from coverage unless you meet both of these requirements: 1) you purchase your Atlas Journey Elevate or Explore plan within 21 days or purchase your Atlas Escape plan within 14 days of the date you made your first payment toward your trip; and 2) you are medically able to travel on your coverage effective date.
