Travel Insurance for Peru

Whether you’re exploring the Amazon rainforest, visiting the ruins of Machu Pichu, or enjoying local cuisine in Lima, Peru is sure to be an amazing adventure. A trip of a lifetime deserves more than just a good itinerary. Travel insurance helps protect your investment against the unexpected, whether that's lost luggage, sudden illness, or injury. That way, you can focus on enjoying the moments that truly matter without worrying about what could derail your plans.

Do You Need Travel Insurance for Peru?

Travel insurance is not legally required to enter Peru, but the U.S. Department of State encourages all international travelers to consider obtaining a policy. Many popular activities for visitors to Peru include exploring scenic, remote regions, where you may not be able to receive medical care immediately. Travel insurance can be a smart choice, especially for travelers planning prepaid activities or those traveling outside of major cities.

Will Domestic Insurance Work in Peru?

Before heading to Peru, it's worth checking whether your U.S. health insurance actually covers you abroad, because many plans offer limited protection, or none at all.

Medicare.gov makes clear that Medicare generally does not pay for medical care outside the United States, with only a handful of narrow exceptions, leaving many travelers without a safety net. Numerous other U.S.-based health plans carry similar gaps.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends purchasing travel medical insurance to fill those gaps — especially important in Peru, where healthcare costs and systems can differ considerably from what U.S. residents are used to.

What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Trip?

Understanding your options is the first step to choosing the right coverage for Peru. The two main types of travel insurance serve different needs: comprehensive trip protection and travel medical insurance

Comprehensive trip protection plans are built to safeguard your prepaid travel investment — covering things like flights, accommodations, and excursions — while also including emergency medical benefits for illness, injury, or evacuation. It's especially well-suited for travelers concerned about losing money to trip delays, interruptions, or cancellations.

WorldTrips' Atlas Journey® plan, for instance, may reimburse eligible non-refundable expenses if your trip is canceled or cut short for a covered reason.

Travel medical insurance, on the other hand, focuses more on unexpected medical situations that arise while you're abroad, with more limited coverage for travel-related issues like lost baggage or trip delays.

WorldTrips' Atlas Travel® insurance goes a step further by connecting travelers with Air Doctor, a service that can arrange telehealth consultations, in-clinic visits, or even care at your hotel. These plans also give you the flexibility to tailor deductibles and coverage limits to fit your destination, trip length, and budget.

Healthcare in Peru

According to the U.S. Department of State, healthcare in Peru varies considerably by location. Adequate health facilities are available in Lima and other major cities, but in rural areas, healthcare may not be as robust. Public medical clinics can lack basic resources and supplies, and both public and private hospitals and doctors often require payment upfront before treatment or admission. Ambulance services are not present throughout the entire country and can be unreliable outside of major cities.

According to the CDC, malaria prevention medication can be a good idea, along with being up to date on vaccinations, including measles, hepatitis A & B, typhoid, and yellow fever depending on where you are planning to visit. Bring your own medication to Peru rather than purchasing pharmaceuticals there, as counterfeit medication is common.

Needing medical care abroad doesn't have to be complicated. With WorldTrips, you're free to visit any healthcare provider in Peru — no network restrictions apply. Just pay at the time of service and file a claim for reimbursement afterward.

When filing your claim with WorldTrips, keep the following documents on hand:

  • Itemized bills that include your diagnosis
  • Medical records and copies of any prescriptions
  • Receipts for every payment made out of pocket
  • A doctor's note if your condition affected your travel plans

Visa & Entry Requirements for Peru

The U.S. Department of State says that no tourist visa is required for entry into Peru if you’re staying for under 90 days. All visitors must have passports valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into Peru, and this rule is enforced. Once you arrive, Peruvian border officials will determine your approved length of stay; if you stay beyond this time, you will be fined.

Be sure that your entry is recorded by immigration officials when you arrive in Peru, for example through a passport stamp. You will not be able to exit Peru without this, until Peruvian immigration authorities are able to confirm the time and place of your entry. For more information, visit the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.

Travel & Safety Tips for Peru

According to the U.S. Department of State and the CDC, here are some travel and safety tips for travelers going to Peru:

Crime

It is wise to travel in groups, and never leave your belongings unattended, including food or drinks. Keep your phone in a secure location, and when driving, keep your belongings in the trunk. Use hotel safes, try to avoid wearing expensive jewelry and clothes, and carry only the cash or credit cards that are necessary.

Demonstrations

Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations, and check local media for updates or traffic concerns.

Using GPS

While GPS apps can be useful for tourists when navigating around Peru, sometimes an app will prioritize giving the shortest route without safety considerations. Research the route to make sure it is safe and try not to look at your phone too much in public.

Earthquakes

Peru is prone to earthquakes due to its location. Be sure to monitor local media and government agencies in the event of a natural disaster.

Water

In many areas, tap water is not safe for consumption, so it is best to stick to bottled water and beverages. Be aware that you may need to specifically request this in restaurants. Note that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Transportation

Visitors are not advised to drive unless they are familiar with local laws. It may be best for tourists to use private taxis or ride share apps from reputable companies, rather than taking public transportation.

Good travel preparation goes beyond packing the right bag — it means having a plan if something doesn't go as expected. Before you head to Peru, explore WorldTrips' travel insurance options and find coverage that fits your trip. Get your quote today!

* Pre Existing Condition Definitions

Pre existing condition definitions vary by plan type. Review the definition that applies to the product you are considering.

Comprehensive Trip Protection

(Atlas Journey, Atlas Cruiser, Atlas On the Go)

Pre existing condition means an illness, disease, or other condition during the 90 day period immediately before your coverage effective date for which you did any of the following:
• received a test, examination, or medical treatment
• received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment
• took or received a prescription for medication

Item (3) above does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the use of prescription medication and remains treated or controlled without any change in required prescription throughout the 90 day period before your coverage effective date.

Change in required prescription means the dosage or frequency has been increased, reduced, stopped, and or new medication has been prescribed due to the worsening of the condition being treated. Exceptions include:
• switching between brand name and generic medication with equivalent dosage
• adjustments to insulin or anti-coagulant dosage

Pre-existing Condition Exclusion Waiver: Pre-existing conditions are excluded from coverage unless you meet both of these requirements: 1) you purchase your Atlas Journey Elevate or Explore plan within 21 days or purchase your Atlas Escape plan within 14 days of the date you made your first payment toward your trip; and 2) you are medically able to travel on your coverage effective date.

If you do not purchase your Atlas Journey plan within the required time period, a 90-day lookback period will apply to pre-existing conditions. Coverage varies by plan and state of residency. Please review the policy documents specific to your plan and state of residency for a full list of covered reasons, conditions, and exclusions.

Travel Medical Insurance

(Atlas Travel, Atlas Premium, Atlas Nomad, Atlas MultiTrip, Atlas America)

Pre-existing Conditions are excluded except for an applicable Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition.

Pre existing condition means any injury, illness, sickness, disease, or other physical, medical, mental, or nervous disorder, condition, or ailment that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of application or at any time during the 2 years prior to the effective date of this insurance. This applies whether or not the condition was previously manifested, symptomatic, known, diagnosed, treated, or disclosed, and includes any subsequent, chronic, or recurring complications or consequences related to the condition.

An Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition means a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence that is of short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent care. A pre-existing condition that is a chronic or congenital, or that gradually becomes worse over time is not acute onset of a pre-existing condition. An Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition does not include any condition for which, as of the Effective date, the Insured Person (i) knew or reasonably foresaw he/she would receive, (ii) knew he/she should receive, (iii) had scheduled, or (iv) was told that he/she must or should receive, any medical care, drugs or treatment.
