Travel Insurance for Portugal
Portugal is a stable, historically rich destination, consistently ranked in the top 10 most peaceful countries in world. Despite its reputation, proactive preparation and travel insurance can be important to consider for international visitors looking to protect their trip from unexpected costs.
Do You Need Travel Insurance for Portugal?
While travel insurance is not a legal requirement, it is advisable for travelers to consider purchasing additional insurance coverage when visiting Portugal (U.S. Department of State). While Portugal is generally considered a safe destination, it’s important to stay aware of the potential risks, which, according to On Call International*, include variable healthcare costs, petty crime such as pickpocketing at popular sites and on public transit, and environmental risks like riptides or seasonal storms.
Will Domestic Insurance Work in Portugal?
Your U.S. health insurance plan may not offer protection while you’re in Portugal, so it’s wise to review your existing coverage before you travel.
According to Medicare.gov, Medicare coverage generally does not apply outside the United States, except in rare situations. Consequently, travelers who depend on Medicare often need supplemental insurance to receive medical care overseas, a limitation common to many U.S.-based health plans.
To address these coverage gaps, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises travelers to consider purchasing travel medical insurance. Given that healthcare systems and costs in Portugal can differ substantially from those in the United States, adequate coverage can help travelers better manage unexpected medical expenses.
What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Trip?
Travel insurance generally falls under two main categories: comprehensive trip protection and travel medical insurance. Determining which one is right for you depends on the type of trip you’re taking and your personal travel needs.
A comprehensive trip protection plan helps safeguard your prepaid, non-refundable expenses—like flights, hotels, and tours—while also offering some medical coverage for unexpected illnesses, injuries, or emergency medical evacuations. This type of plan is best suited for travelers who want financial protection from trip disruptions, cancellations, or delays that could result in lost payments or extra expenses.
For example, WorldTrips’ comprehensive trip protection plan, Atlas Journey®, can reimburse you for covered trip cancellations or interruptions, helping you recover non-refundable costs if your plans change for a covered reason.
Travel medical insurance, on the other hand, is designed primarily to cover unexpected medical needs while abroad. These plans also include some trip-related benefits, such as coverage for lost baggage or travel delays.
With Atlas Travel® insurance, you gain access to Air Doctor — a service that connects travelers with telehealth consultations, in-clinic visits, or even in-hotel care during their trip. These flexible plans allow you to customize your deductible and coverage limits to suit your destination, trip duration, and budget.

Healthcare in Portugal
According to On Call International* and the U.S. Department of State, Portugal offers quality health services nationwide. In major cities, translators are readily available and many doctors speak English. If you take prescription medications, bring enough for your trip plus spare doses and keep them in clearly labeled original packaging. If you need a new prescription while in Portugal, physicians typically require the original, signed prescription from your home doctor. Because healthcare costs can vary, travelers are advised to maintain adequate insurance coverage for the duration of their stay. For pre‑travel guidance, consult official public health resources before departure.
If you require medical care while in Portugal, WorldTrips allows you to visit any healthcare provider of your choice for eligible medical benefits—there are no network restrictions. You’ll pay the provider directly at the time of treatment and then submit a claim for reimbursement consideration. To ensure your claim is processed smoothly when filing your claim with WorldTrips, be sure to keep the following documents:
- Itemized medical bills with diagnosis details
- Medical records and prescription information
- Receipts for all payments made
- A doctor’s note if your condition impacted your travel plans

Visa & Entry Requirements for Portugal
Austria is a member of both the European Union and the Schengen Area; this means that U.S. citizens visiting Austria as tourists for under 90 days do not need a visa. They will require a passport that is valid for 3 months beyond the period of stay, along with proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket (U.S. Department of State).
Note that it is mandatory to be able to show photographic identification. If you are not carrying your passport when police ask for ID, they can escort you to where it is being kept. Additionally, Austrian law prohibits clothing that completely covers the face in public areas, and this applies to visitors as well. Violations can result in fines.
Stay alert in known hotspots.
Petty theft is a common potential risk for visitors. In Lisbon and in any large city, extra care is advised near public transportation locations like Santa Apolónia, Oriente, Entrecampos, Marquês de Pombal, and Rossio stations; at the Sete Rios bus station; and in the Alfama, Martim Moniz, Baixa, and Bairro Alto districts. Keep your bag zipped and in front of you and avoid distractions.
Secure your documents.
Do not carry your original passport while sightseeing if you can avoid it. Carry a photocopy and keep the original locked in your accommodation. If a passport is stolen, file a police report before visiting your embassy. appreciate punctuality and a polite, low-key style.Protect your cards and cash.
Credit card fraud and ATM skimming can occur. Use ATMs inside banks or reputable locations, check statements frequently, and report suspicious charges immediately. Exchange currency only at banks or licensed exchange offices, not on the street.Choose accommodation carefully.
Reports of hotel room thefts have increased. Select reputable properties with staffed front desks and use the in‑room safe for valuables.Mind the nightlife.
Do not leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers. Travel in groups when possible and seek medical care if you experience sudden dizziness, nausea, or fatigue.
Know the road rules.
The infrastructure is generally good. Self‑driving is best for those familiar with local laws and routes. If you are involved in a car accident, Portuguese law requires that you do not move the vehicles and that you notify police. Taxis and e‑hailing services such as Uber operate in many areas.Respect demonstrations.
Protests related to political or social issues occur but are usually peaceful. Avoid protest areas on principle and follow police instructions if you encounter a gathering.
Be sea‑smart.
Many beaches use a red‑yellow‑green flag system to show water conditions and potential riptides. Do not swim alone or while intoxicated. Some crimes have been reported along beaches and remote trails at night, so avoid isolated areas after dark.
Watch the weather.
Portugal sits in an active seismic zone and also experiences storms and flash flooding, especially in September and November. Monitor local forecasts and be ready to adjust plans.
