Travel Insurance for Belgium
Belgium may be a small country, but it packs in a lot — from the medieval streets of Bruges to the vibrant city life of Brussels and the World War I memorials of Flanders. Like any international destination, it comes with its share of travel uncertainties, from unexpected medical situations to trip disruptions. Before you go, purchasing travel insurance for Belgium can help ensure you have a plan in place if something doesn't go as expected.
Do You Need Travel Insurance for Belgium?
Travel insurance isn't a requirement for visiting Denmark, but the U.S. Department of State encourages all U.S. residents traveling abroad to consider purchasing a policy before they go. Although Denmark has a world-class healthcare system, you could still face significant out-of-pocket costs if you need medical attention during your trip. Throw in the possibility of a cancelled flight, delayed baggage, or an emergency back home cutting your trip short, and the value of a solid travel insurance plan becomes clear. A little preparation before you leave can save you a lot of stress — and expense — if something goes wrong.
Will Domestic Insurance Work in Denmark?
It's easy to assume your U.S. health insurance will cover you in Belgium, but for many travelers, that coverage is far more limited than expected. Medicare generally does not cover care received outside the United States, with only a few narrow exceptions, and many private plans have comparable restrictions (Medicare.gov).
That’s why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends considering travel medical insurance before you go. In a destination like Belgium, where healthcare costs and systems can vary considerably, that coverage can make a real difference.
What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Trip?
There are two main types of travel insurance to consider for your Belgium trip: comprehensive trip protection and travel medical insurance.
Comprehensive trip protection is designed to safeguard your prepaid travel investment — including flights, accommodations, and excursions — while also providing emergency medical benefits for illness, injury, or evacuation.
WorldTrips' Atlas Journey® plan, for example, may reimburse eligible non-refundable expenses if your trip is canceled or cut short for a covered reason.
Travel medical insurance is more focused on unexpected medical situations that arise while you're abroad, with more limited coverage for issues like lost checked baggage or trip delays.
WorldTrips' Atlas Travel® insurance allows you to adjust deductibles and coverage limits to match your trip and budget. It also enhances your coverage with access to Air Doctor, a service that allows you to coordinate telehealth visits, in-clinic appointments, or even in-person care at your hotel.

Visa & Entry Requirements for Belgium
Belgium is part of the Schengen zone, meaning U.S. visitors do not need a visa for tourism stays of 90 days or less. Travelers should ensure their passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond their departure date and have proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket on hand (U.S. Department of State).
Travel & Safety Tips for Belgium
Here are some travel & safety tips for Belgium from the U.S. Department of State:
Petty Crime
Keep bags with cash, valuables, and travel documents close to you rather than in overhead compartments. Carry only what you need, avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics, and stay alert to your surroundings.Demonstrations
Demonstrations occur frequently in Belgium; avoid protest areas, monitor local media for updates, and check the U.S. Embassy website for alerts.Financial Scams
Be aware of scams and inspect ATMs for skimming devices, use bank ATMs when possible, and never allow your card to be taken out of sight in bars or restaurants.Accessibility
Belgium requires new public buildings to meet accessibility standards, but many older structures and public transportation systems remain less accommodating for travelers with disabilities.Transportation
Belgium's major cities are served by extensive public transportation networks, with trains, buses, and ferries — train travel is generally considered safer than driving. * Pre Existing Condition Definitions
Pre existing condition definitions vary by plan type. Review the definition that applies to the product you are considering.
Comprehensive Trip Protection
(Atlas Journey, Atlas Cruiser, Atlas On the Go)
Pre existing condition means an illness, disease, or other condition during the 90 day period immediately before your coverage effective date for which you did any of the following:
• received a test, examination, or medical treatment
• received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment
• took or received a prescription for medication
Item (3) above does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the use of prescription medication and remains treated or controlled without any change in required prescription throughout the 90 day period before your coverage effective date.
Change in required prescription means the dosage or frequency has been increased, reduced, stopped, and or new medication has been prescribed due to the worsening of the condition being treated. Exceptions include:
• switching between brand name and generic medication with equivalent dosage
• adjustments to insulin or anti-coagulant dosage
Pre-existing Condition Exclusion Waiver: Pre-existing conditions are excluded from coverage unless you meet both of these requirements: 1) you purchase your Atlas Journey Elevate or Explore plan within 21 days or purchase your Atlas Escape plan within 14 days of the date you made your first payment toward your trip; and 2) you are medically able to travel on your coverage effective date.
If you do not purchase your Atlas Journey plan within the required time period, a 90-day lookback period will apply to pre-existing conditions. Coverage varies by plan and state of residency. Please review the policy documents specific to your plan and state of residency for a full list of covered reasons, conditions, and exclusions.
Travel Medical Insurance
(Atlas Travel, Atlas Premium, Atlas Nomad, Atlas MultiTrip, Atlas America)
Pre-existing Conditions are excluded except for an applicable Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition.
Pre existing condition means any injury, illness, sickness, disease, or other physical, medical, mental, or nervous disorder, condition, or ailment that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of application or at any time during the 2 years prior to the effective date of this insurance. This applies whether or not the condition was previously manifested, symptomatic, known, diagnosed, treated, or disclosed, and includes any subsequent, chronic, or recurring complications or consequences related to the condition.
An Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition means a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence that is of short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent care. A pre-existing condition that is a chronic or congenital, or that gradually becomes worse over time is not acute onset of a pre-existing condition. An Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition does not include any condition for which, as of the Effective date, the Insured Person (i) knew or reasonably foresaw he/she would receive, (ii) knew he/she should receive, (iii) had scheduled, or (iv) was told that he/she must or should receive, any medical care, drugs or treatment.
