Travel Insurance for Malaysia

From the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur to the serene shores of Langkawi and the lush highlands of Cameron, Malaysia is a destination that captivates every kind of traveler. When you’re planning a trip this incredible, the last thing you want is an unexpected issue to derail your plans. Travel insurance can protect your trip against the unexpected — from lost checked luggage to sudden illness — so you can focus on the moments that matter most.

Do You Need Travel Insurance for Malaysia?

Travel insurance is not legally required to enter Malaysia, but the U.S. Department of State encourages all international travelers to consider obtaining a policy. Many of Malaysia's most popular destinations can be far from immediate medical care, including Borneo and Sabah. Travel insurance can be a smart choice, particularly for travelers with prepaid activities, those venturing off the beaten path, or anyone spending time outside of major cities like Kuala Lumpur or George Town.

Will Domestic Insurance Work in Malaysia?

Before traveling to Malaysia, it's important to understand what your U.S. health insurance actually covers abroad. Medicare, for instance, generally does not cover medical care outside the United States, with only a few narrow exceptions (Medicare.gov). Many other U.S. health plans have similar exclusions.

That's why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends purchasing travel medical insurance — particularly for a destination like Malaysia, where healthcare costs and systems can differ significantly from what Americans are accustomed to.

What Type of Travel Insurance is Right for Your Trip?

Knowing your options is the first step toward finding the right coverage for Malaysia. There are two main types of travel insurance to consider: comprehensive trip protection and travel medical insurance.

Comprehensive trip protection plans are designed to safeguard your prepaid travel investment — covering flights, accommodations, and excursions — while also including limited emergency medical benefits for illness, injury, or evacuation.

It may be a better choice for travelers who want financial protection against trip delays, interruptions, or cancellations. WorldTrips' Atlas Journey® plan, for example, may reimburse eligible non-refundable expenses if your trip is canceled or cut short for a covered reason.

Travel medical insurance, on the other hand, focuses primarily on unexpected medical situations that arise while you're abroad, with more limited coverage for travel-related issues like lost checked baggage or trip delays.

WorldTrips' Atlas Travel® insurance takes it a step further by connecting travelers with Air Doctor — a service that can arrange telehealth consultations, in-clinic visits, or even care at your hotel. These plans also offer the flexibility to adjust deductibles and coverage limits to suit your destination, trip length, and budget.

Healthcare in Malaysia

According to the U.S. Department of State, health facilities are available across the country, though it may be harder to find adequate care in rural areas. Medical staff in rural areas may speak limited or no English, and public hospitals often have minimal overnight staffing in non-emergency wards.

Ambulance wait times can be longer than U.S. standards and they may not be as well-equipped. Some travelers prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the hospital if they are well enough to do so. Be sure to carry any prescription medication in its original packaging, and check with the Ministry of Health to ensure that your medication is legal to bring into Malaysia.

Accessing medical care abroad doesn't have to be a stressful experience. WorldTrips allows you to visit any healthcare provider in Malaysia — no network restrictions, no pre-approvals. Simply pay at the time of service and submit a claim for reimbursement afterward.

When filing your claim with WorldTrips, have the following documents ready:

  • Itemized bills that include your diagnosis
  • Medical records and copies of any prescriptions
  • Receipts for all out-of-pocket payments made
  • A doctor's note if your condition impacted your travel plans

Visa & Entry Requirements for Malaysia

Before traveling to Malaysia, visitors should fill out the Malaysian Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). Upon arrival, the U.S. Department of State notes that you will receive a “social visit pass” that is equivalent to a visa. This will allow you to stay up to 90 days for tourism in Malaysia.

At the airport, those who have filled out an MDAC will be able to pass through the autogate, which allows visitors to scan their passport at arrivals and walk through an automated gate for immigration clearance. Note that using the autogate means that you will not receive a stamp in your passport, so you are responsible for leaving before your permitted length of stay expires.

Travel & Safety Tips for Malaysia

Malaysia is generally considered a safe destination to visit, but it is always important to be prepared. Here are some travel and safety tips for Malaysia, according to the U.S. Department of State and the CDC:

 Crime

Petty theft targeting both locals and foreigners has occurred, including purse snatching, pickpocketing, smash-and-grab theft, and residential burglary. Violent crime is less common.

 Transportation

Use ride-hailing apps or taxis booked by phone instead of hailing a cab on the street, especially at night. Keep valuables out of sight while driving and remove them when parked. Do not leave GPS devices visible on the windshield or dashboard.

 Demonstrations

Avoid demonstrations and do not join protests. Non-Malaysians are prohibited from participating in protests, so steering clear is the safest and simplest approach.

 Personal Safety

Criminals may use dating apps to target foreigners, so it is best to meet in popular public places and share your plans with friends or family. Never leave food or drinks unattended and refuse food or drinks from strangers.

 Food & Water Safety

Choose food and drinks carefully, as in many cases, tap water is not safe to drink. Drink only bottled water and do not consume ice made from tap water; it is smart to make these requests at restaurants as well. Be sure that any fruits and vegetables you consume are cooked.

 Mosquitos

Malaria, Zika, and Dengue are prevalent in Malaysia. Prevent bug bites with long sleeves and insect repellent, sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms when possible, and use a bed net if your sleeping area is exposed to the outdoors.

 Weather

Malaysia has high temperatures, humidity, and significant rainfall throughout the year, with monsoon flooding and landslides during certain seasons. Heat-related illness can be serious, so travelers should stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, use sunscreen and shade, and reduce physical activity during high temperatures.

Being prepared for your Malaysia trip means goes beyond just knowing what to pack. Explore WorldTrips' travel insurance options before you go, and travel knowing you have a plan if something doesn't go as expected. Get your quote today!

* Pre Existing Condition Definitions

Pre existing condition definitions vary by plan type. Review the definition that applies to the product you are considering.

Comprehensive Trip Protection

(Atlas Journey, Atlas Cruiser, Atlas On the Go)

Pre existing condition means an illness, disease, or other condition during the 90 day period immediately before your coverage effective date for which you did any of the following:
• received a test, examination, or medical treatment
• received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment
• took or received a prescription for medication

Item (3) above does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the use of prescription medication and remains treated or controlled without any change in required prescription throughout the 90 day period before your coverage effective date.

Change in required prescription means the dosage or frequency has been increased, reduced, stopped, and or new medication has been prescribed due to the worsening of the condition being treated. Exceptions include:
• switching between brand name and generic medication with equivalent dosage
• adjustments to insulin or anti-coagulant dosage

Pre-existing Condition Exclusion Waiver: Pre-existing conditions are excluded from coverage unless you meet both of these requirements: 1) you purchase your Atlas Journey Elevate or Explore plan within 21 days or purchase your Atlas Escape plan within 14 days of the date you made your first payment toward your trip; and 2) you are medically able to travel on your coverage effective date.

If you do not purchase your Atlas Journey plan within the required time period, a 90-day lookback period will apply to pre-existing conditions. Coverage varies by plan and state of residency. Please review the policy documents specific to your plan and state of residency for a full list of covered reasons, conditions, and exclusions.

Travel Medical Insurance

(Atlas Travel, Atlas Premium, Atlas Nomad, Atlas MultiTrip, Atlas America)

Pre-existing Conditions are excluded except for an applicable Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition.

Pre existing condition means any injury, illness, sickness, disease, or other physical, medical, mental, or nervous disorder, condition, or ailment that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of application or at any time during the 2 years prior to the effective date of this insurance. This applies whether or not the condition was previously manifested, symptomatic, known, diagnosed, treated, or disclosed, and includes any subsequent, chronic, or recurring complications or consequences related to the condition.

An Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition means a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence that is of short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent care. A pre-existing condition that is a chronic or congenital, or that gradually becomes worse over time is not acute onset of a pre-existing condition. An Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition does not include any condition for which, as of the Effective date, the Insured Person (i) knew or reasonably foresaw he/she would receive, (ii) knew he/she should receive, (iii) had scheduled, or (iv) was told that he/she must or should receive, any medical care, drugs or treatment.
